More Americans say global warming exaggerated: poll

(Reuters) - A growing number of Americans, nearly half the country, think global warming worriesTeam Canada jerseys are exaggerated and more people doubt that scientific warnings of severe environmental fallout#x will ever occur, according to a new Gallup poll.

The new doubts come as President Barack Obama pressures Congress to produce legislation significantly cutting smokestack emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases blamed for climate change problems.

Gallup’s survey was released on the same day that the Obama administration unveiled in Texas a public-private report underscoring threats to birds as climate change alters their habitat and food supply, pushing many species to extinction.

With congressional elections in November, hats, many lawmakers Team Canada jerseysare hesitant to take on a controversial energy and environment bill, especially if voter interest is waning.

Around the world, concerns about climate change have dipped as economic worries took higher priority, according to a Nielson/Oxford University survey in December, which found the highest concern was in Latin America and Asia-Pacific countries like the Philippines, where typhoons are a big threat.

While U.S. worries about climate change fell significantly in the Nielson poll, they did not come close to some eastern European countries such as Estonia, which ranked bottom.

In response to escalating attacks from global warming skeptics, the Union of Concerned Scientists on Thursday released a letter they said was signed by more than 2,000 climate scientists and economists, including some Nobel prize winners, urging the U.S. Senate to pass a climate change bill.

“The strength of the science on climate change compels us to warn the nation about the growing risk of irreversible consequences … as temperatures Team Canada jerseysrise further, the scope and severity of global warming impacts#x will continue to accelerate,” they wrote.

Long-used, little-studied laxative safe, effective

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Until now, a scant number of top notch clinical trials decorative fruithave evaluated whether sodium picosulfate — the active ingredient in numerous over-the-counter laxatives — is safe and effective.

Dr. Stefan Mueller-Lissner#x, at Charite-Universitatsmedizin Berlin, in Germany, and colleagues conducted such a trial and found sodium picosulfate both safe and effective for chronic constipation.

Sodium picosulfate, found in laxative pills and also in oral drinks that purge intestines and bowels in preparation for a colonoscopy exam,Compact fluorescent lamp, was identified as a laxative long before drugs had to be studied to become licensed, Mueller-Lissner explained in an email to Reuters Health.

Hence, sodium picosulfate lacks decorative fruit“a nice portfolio of controlled clinical trials” for researchers to compare with those of newer laxatives.

Mueller-Lissner’s team began to address this oversight by testing sodium picosulfate versus a similar-tasting and looking inactive placebo in adults who had constipation for 13 years on average.

For 4 weeks, 233 participants took 18 sodium picosulfate drops (about 10 milligrams) by mouth each evening while the remaining 134 took 18 drops of the placebo. None knew which liquid they were taking, the researchers note in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.

Anyone with excessive diarrhea or severe abdominal discomfort, which can happen with laxatives, could cut their dose in half after consulting with a study investigator. Half of those taking the sodium picosulfate-containing laxative, but none taking placebo, did cut their dose by the end of the 4 weeks. The researchers provided decorative fruitlaxative suppositories #xfor use by anyone without a bowel movement for more than 72 hours.

Micro-Retro 4: Milton Bradley Microvision

Let’s turn back the clock all the way to the first Waterproof tarphandheld game system with interchangeable cartridges. Nope, that one’s too recent!#x Rewind ten years before the GameBoy and you’ll come to Milton Bradley’s Microvision, an ambitious, nearly pocked-sized console which first debuted in 1979. This machine laid the groundwork for future portable game systems, relying on a battery as its power source and featuring its own LCD display. The Microvision also had a dynamic control scheme, with a dial and up to twelve buttons on the face of the unit. Each game doubled as a system overlay that determined the number of buttons the player could access, along with the function of each.

The Microvision was ahead of its time… perhaps too far ahead of its time, if its construction and the quality of its games are any indication. The technology was bulkier than dedicated handhelds like Nintendo’s Game & Watch series, so kids who wanted to sneak in a few games during class were going to have a heck of a time trying to hide it behind their books. The liquid crystal display was also manufactured in less than ideal conditions, giving the system a short shelf life. While most handhelds from the early 1980s still have sharp, clear images thirty years later,State Flags, it’s nearly impossible Waterproof tarpto find a Microvision with a screen that hasn’t turned into an inky black mess.

Also, the games were lackluster, to put it kindly. Remember how when the GameBoy first debuted, most of the titles that launched with it were pale imitations of popular franchises on the Nintendo Entertainment System? The same thing happened with the Microvision ten years earlier. Since home video games were already barebones experiences in 1979, they were stripped to the bone marrow when ported to the GameBoy’s prehistoric ancestor.

Take the Microvision pack-in Block Buster, for instance. This Breakout clone gave the player scant few options and just one wall to break in comparison to the more robust Super Breakout, released one year earlier for the Atari 2600. Pinball actually was the same game with just four onscreen targets… the ball would madly bounce between a quartet of bumpers until finally returning to your paddle, making even Video Pinball for the 2600 seem like a faithful simulation by comparison. Star Trek: Phaser Strike was a shooting galley with a crudely drawn cannon firing at shapeless targets. So vague was its design that Milton Bradley#x stripped the game of its license Waterproof tarpwhile changing absolutely nothing else.

Democrats Push Ahead on Finance Bill
WASHINGTON — Democrats said on Thursday that they would goFire hose it alone in an effort to pass an overhaul of financial regulation#x, increasing the likelihood of a bitter partisan showdown.

Senator Christopher J. Dodd of Connecticut, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee,网站优化, said he would put forward his own bill on Monday, despite the lack of a single Republican endorsement. Democrats concluded that bipartisan talks were not making enough progress and that going their own way was the only realistic hope of getting the legislation adopted in an election year, he said.

Mr. Dodd said the bill would rewrite the rules of Wall Street, end the “too big to fail” phenomenon and protect consumers from risky or abusive financial products. The Congressional calendar meant that further delay could imperil the legislation’s chances, he said.

The chief Republican negotiator Fire hoseon the bill, Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, called Mr. Dodd’s decision “very disappointing” and said, “There’s no question that White House politics and health care have kept us from getting to the goal line.”

Mr. Corker said the impasse was caused by the Democratic threat to use the parliamentary procedure known as reconciliation to overhaul health care. “The elephant in the room is reconciliation,” he said, describing Mr. Dodd as “a victim of health care policy.”

The White House, which has called the legislation one of its top priorities, rejected that explanation. “Republicans in the Senate are going to have to ask themselves why they would stand in the way of financial reform,” Mr. Obama’s press secretary, Robert Gibbs, said at a news conference.

Mr. Gibbs, who said that “lobbyists are being hired hand over fist to kill financial reform,” said of lawmakers: “I don’t believe many are going to want to go home and face voters next November not having done something.”

While Mr. Dodd and Mr. Corker took pains to praise each other and held out hope that a compromise could still be achieved, the developments#x clearly made the prospects Fire hosefor the legislation more difficult.

Federal authorities have charged a trendy Santa Monica sushi restaurant with serving whale meatTeaching apparatus — an investigation that was spurred by the team behind the Oscar-winning documentary, “The Cove.”#x

Prosecutors charged Typhoon Restaurant Inc., the parent company of The Hump, and one of its chefs — Kiyoshiro Yamamoto, 45 — with the illegal sale of a marine mammal product for an unauthorized purpose.

While it is considered a delicacy in Japan and some other countries, meat from whale — an endangered species — is illegal to consume in the United States.

The misdemeanor charge carries a federal prison sentence of up to a year and a fine of up to $200,000 for the company, said Thom Mrozek, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Lawyers for Typhoon could not be reached for comment. #xBut the restaurant told the Los Angeles Times it accepts responsibility and will pay a fine.

The investigation began in October when two members of the team that made “The Cove” visited The Hump, Teaching apparatusofficials said.

“The Cove,” which exposes the annual killing of dolphins at a Japanese fishing village,Pearl earrings, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary on Sunday.

The restaurant, located at the Santa Monica Airport, is known for its exotic fare. Its Web site asks diners to surrender themselves to its chefs for “a culinary adventure … unlike any that you have previously experienced.”

Armed with a hidden camera, the two women captured the waitress serving them whale and horse meat and identifying them as such, a federal criminal complaint said. #xA receipt from the restaurant at the end of the meal identified their selection as “whale” and “horse” with the cost — $85 — written next to them.Teaching apparatus

Women Who Drink Gain Less Weight
Dieters are often advised to stop drinking alcohol to avoid the extra calories lurking in a glass Pearl ringof wine or a favorite cocktail. But new research suggests that women who regularly consume moderate amounts of alcohol are less likely to gain weight than nondrinkers and are at lower risk for obesity.#x

The findings, reported this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, are based on a study of 19,220 United States women aged 39 or older who, at the start of the study, fell into the “normal weight” category based on their body mass index. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston tracked the women’s drinking habits over 13 years. About 60 percent of the women were light or regular drinkers,Pearl earrings, while about 40 percent reported drinking no alcohol.

Over the course of the study, 41 percent of the women became overweight or obese. Although alcohol is packed with calories (about 150 in a six-ounce glass of wine), #xthe nondrinkers in the study actually gained more weight over time: nine pounds, on average, compared with an average gain of about three pounds among regular moderate drinkers. The risk of becoming overweight was almost 30 percent lower for women who consumed one or two alcohol beverages a day,Pearl ring compared with nondrinkers.

The findings are certain to be confusing for women who continue to receive conflicting messages about the health benefits and risks of alcohol. Although moderate drinking is associated with better heart health, regular drinking also increases breast cancer risk.

The trend toward less weight gain among drinkers doesn’t appear to hold true for men. A 2003 study of British men showed that regular drinkers gained more weight than nondrinkers. Studies suggest that drinking alcohol has different effects on eating habits among men and women. #xMen typically add alcohol to their daily caloric intake, whereas women are more likely to substitute alcohol for food. In the Archives study, Pearl ringwomen who drank alcohol reported fewer calories from food sources, particularly carbohydrates.

Haven’t found that software glitch, Toyota? Keep trying
There has been a lot of speculation recently that Toyota’s problems with sudden acceleration may be caused by a problem in the vehicles’ electronics systems. Compact fluorescent lampThe “electronics” includes millions of lines of software running on the automobiles’ computers. As The Times reported on March 3, #xToyota’s chief engineer testified to Congress that the company has done extensive testing on its cars’ electronics and believes they are not the cause of the sudden acceleration.

Having owned a Toyota myself, I have always been a fan of what I perceived to be the automaker’s high standards for quality. I also happen to have more than three decades of experience designing, building and researching reliable computer systems, many of which are embedded inside other devices. Based on this experience, I find it very difficult to accept the statements from Toyota’s chief engineer. And the implications extend beyond Toyota, to all other companies that rely on software for their product safety.

As anyone with experience in embedded systems will tell you,Compact fluorescent lamp there are nasty software bugs that can be extremely difficult to reproduce in a laboratory test environment. To illustrate, #xI’d like to describe one such bug we encountered at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory while developing the flight software for NASA’s Mars Pathfinder spacecraft.

Because of Pathfinder’s high reliability requirements and the probability of unpredictable hardware errors due to the increased radiation effects in space, we adopted a highly “defensive” programming style. This included performing extensive error checks in the software to detect the possible side effects of radiation-induced hardware glitches and certain software bugs.

One member of our team, Steve Stolper, had a simple arithmetic computation in his software that was guaranteed to produce an even result (2, 4, 6 and so on) if the computer was working correctly. Many programmers would not bother to check the result of such a simple computation. Stolper, however, put in an explicit test to see if the result was even. We referred to this test as his “two-plus-two-equals-five check.” We never expected to see it fail.

Lo and behold, during software testing we saw Stolper’s error message indicating the check had failed. We saw it just once. We were never able to reproduce the failure,DVD Ripper, despite repeated attempts over many thousands if not millions of iterations. We scratched our heads. How could this happen, especially in the benign environment of our software test lab, Compact fluorescent lampwhere radiation effects were virtually nonexistent? We looked carefully at Stolper’s code, #xand it was sound.
